DIY for Less: Studded Suede Dress

Do It Yourself Diy For Less How to apply studs to suede or leather dress clothing

I spotted this Forever 21 suede shift dress and thought it would be the perfect dress to recreate the AllSaints Studded Erin Dress. The seams on the Forever 21 dress are at the perfect areas to line with studs. The job is pretty tedious but the end results are well worth the outcome and savings.

Option 1: Using Studs with Prongs

Supplies:

- affordable suede or leather dress
- 8mm pronged studs (approx. 275)
- needle-head plyers
- ruler or straight edge (optional)
- chalk (optional)

Instructions:

1. Lay studs on the dress to get an idea of positioning and spacing. The recommended dresses have seams to follow as a guide. Using a ruler or chalk markings may be helpful.

2. Press the stud prongs through the fabic. If you are having difficulty puncturing the fabric, you may use any pointed object to pre-make holes. It may be helpful to make markings with the prongs where the pre-made holds should be made.

3. Use the plyers to flatten the prongs down. This may also be done with a thimble or blunt knife.

4. Repeat until gems line the neckline, the sleeves, across the the front waist, vertically down the front middle, and around the hemline.

Option 2: Using Adhesive to Apply Studs

Supplies:

 - affordable suede or leather dress
- 8mm pronged or flat-back studs (approx. 275)
- toothpicks
- ruler or straight edge (optional)
- chalk (optional)

Instructions:

1. If using pronged studs, flatten the prongs with plyers, a thimble or blunt knife.  Skip this step if you are using flat-back studs.

2. Lay studs on the dress to get an idea of positioning and spacing. The recommended dresses have seams to follow as a guide. Using a ruler or chalk markings may be helpful.

3. Use a toothpick to apply glue to the back of the stud.  Hold the stud in place for a few seconds.

4. Repeat until gems line the neckline, the sleeves, across the the front waist, vertically down the front middle, and around the hemline.
